Our fall/winter internship program is robust and if you or someone you know is considering a career in marine conservation, environmental science, or biology - we have amazing opportunities for hands-on experiences. The skill sets and education you will learn in our program can be directly applied to real world jobs. Plus you have the most beautiful learning environment you could ever imagine.
A few notes to consider before we break down the internship positions available.
You must be 18 years old.
These internships can qualify for college credit.
These are unpaid positions and housing is not provided.
You must be eager to learn and share your passion with others.

Estuary EDventures Education Program in Tierra Verde:
Into adventure? TBW hosts students of all ages for adventures in a marine estuarine environment. This will include things like dissections, dip netting, plankton pulls and more! You may be used to learning about these techniques in an academic classroom, now get real experience conducting hands-on research with children of all ages. This internship requires a minimum commitment of two days a week Tuesday-Friday from 9-2pm. More information can be found here.
Restoration of Tampa Bay in Tierra Verde:
Want to be a part of the programs actively working to improve marine habitat in Tampa Bay? Our restoration internship focuses on programs like the community wetland nursery, oyster reef enhancement, and marine debris removal. If you are looking for experience in environmental/ marine science, public engagement, and programs around restoration efforts in Tampa Bay, this is a match made in heaven. This internship requires a two-day commitment from 9-2pm. More information can be found here.
Environmental Education Internship at the Discovery Center:
If you are a people person and love engaging with the public on all things marine science, you’ll want to check out our education internship at the St. Pete Pier. This position focuses on supporting our educators that provide programming to partners, members, and visitors. Some responsibilities will include educational animal encounters and public outreach, assisting in the coordination of special events designed around marine education, environmental awareness, and wildlife conservation. You may assist in handling and training our education animals, or design environmental projects, programs, and games. You’ll work with our education coordinator to determine the number of hours and days per week required. More information can be found here.
Eco-Vessel Environmental Education Internship at the Discovery Center:
If you love field research with the wind in your hair and water under your feet then you will love the experience of interning on the Discovery, our eco-vessel. Focused on hands-on practical learning in conservation, environmental education, and field ecology our eco-vessel interns will perform field activities like trawling, plant and animal identification, and snorkeling. These activities are performed in an outreach setting that combines public and private programming. Take part in research initiatives like dolphin dorsal fin identification, harmful algal bloom monitoring, and water quality monitoring. This internship prefers a minimum commitment of 20 hours a week. More information can be found here.
Animal Husbandry Internship at the Discovery Center:
If you love reptiles, amphibians, marine invertebrates, and fish and are looking for a career in animal husbandry, this is an incredible opportunity! Animal husbandry interns develop skills in animal care including assisting with animal health and behavior monitoring, diet preparation and feeding, delivery of treatments or medications, and cleaning and maintenance of animal habitats. This is hands-on animal experience with the bonus of getting to share what you learn through education and outreach events. You’ll provide support to the Education Coordinator and Animal Husbandry Specialist and work an agreed upon amount of hours. More information can be found here.
